Painted Fish? Our Guys Asks You to do Your Homework! - Dec. 06, 2010

Tom is our fish guy at Animal Essentials. His passion goes beyond anyone we've had at Animal Essentials.

We do not carry painted fish at the store and he will explain why.

It's a good read. Normally mild-mannered, his fins are up on this one.

I normally do not rant, but I have to this time since it is a common question.

Many customers ask for painted tetras, painted glass cats, painted corydora, coloured blood parrots, etc. I tell them I will never, ever bring those in for people. In fact, I highly discourage people from buying them anywhere. It is just disgusting how they are made in my honest opinion.

This means they will never be at our store. Our fish are not artificially enhanced. If you see a vibrant fish at Animal Essentials, it’s real.

Once I explain how these things are made, most people are grossed out and feel bad they asked for them. It simply comes down to the fact that other pet stores do sell these fish, but do not state how they are made and what they go through. So, I decided to try and educate anyone who is reading this blog.

This is a great article explaining “Painted Fish” and I highly recommend reading it if you like colourful fish and purchase fish at pet stores, other than Animal Essentials.

If customers don’t buy the painted fish, then stores will not order them. Simple supply and demand, so this all rests with the customers really. Sorry for the rant, but I had to get it out of me. See you at the store Monday and Tuesday. If all goes well, there will be a few new fish on Tuesday as well as a lot of plants.
